But his ascension to the head of the group, which oversees the third-most popular Internet browser, had been challenged after reports revealed he had donated $1,000 to support California’s Proposition 8 in 2008. He is the only Mozilla employee on record to have donated to support Prop. 8, although several gave against it.

Mozilla exec out of job for gay rights intolerance. Some think that’s intolerant.

Andrew Sullivan, a gay writer and proponent of same-sex marriage rights, wrote :

“The whole episode disgusts me – as it should disgust anyone interested in a tolerant and diverse society. If this is the gay rights movement today – hounding our opponents with a fanaticism more like the religious right than anyone else – then count me out.”
